🌊 Frequently Asked Questions
Becoming a Certified Scuba Diver
🧒 1. How old do I need to be to get scuba certified?
You can start learning scuba as young as 10 years old through our Junior Open Water Diver program. At 15, your certification automatically upgrades to Open Water Diver. Advanced and scientific diving courses begin at 16–18, depending on the program.
🏊 2. Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You don’t have to be an athlete — just comfortable in the water. You should be able to swim about 200 yards and float for 10 minutes. Our instructors teach you everything you need to dive safely and confidently.
📅 3. How long does it take to get certified?
Most students complete their certification in 3–4 days. Training includes:
Online or classroom academics
Pool (confined water) sessions
Four open water dives
We offer flexible scheduling through our Winter Pool Program, local weekend dives, and youth sessions.
🪸 4. Is scuba diving safe?
Absolutely — when properly trained. Our programs follow international CMAS, SDI, and AAUS standards, emphasizing:
Safety and equipment checks
Dive planning and buddy systems
Emergency readiness
Our instructors are professional, certified, and experienced in youth and research diving.
🧰 5. What equipment do I need?
You’ll start with basic personal gear:
Mask
Fins
Snorkel
Boots
We provide or rent the rest — BCD, regulator, tanks, and wetsuit. Many divers later purchase their own for comfort and familiarity.
❤️ 6. Can I dive if I have a medical condition?
Possibly. Before training, you’ll complete a medical questionnaire. Some conditions (like asthma or heart issues) require doctor approval. Safety is our priority, and we’ll guide you through any necessary steps.
🌅 7. Where will my training dives take place?
We conduct:
Pool sessions at the Meriden YMCA
Open water dives at local lakes and regional sites
Optional tropical training during our annual Bonaire Educational Expedition
Our students often continue into research diver or scientific diver tracks.
🌎 8. How long does my certification last?
Your Open Water certification is valid for life and recognized worldwide. If you haven’t dived recently, we recommend a refresher course to rebuild confidence and review safety procedures.
