2. The Scientific Track (Research)

Built for university researchers, environmental professionals, and dedicated citizen scientists. This track trains divers to rigorous global standards, including the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) and CMAS protocols. You will learn how to safely conduct underwater data collection, environmental monitoring, and marine conservation right here in New England and beyond.

3.The Vocational Track (Public Safety Diving)

Dedicated to the first responders who serve our communities. This highly specialized pathway provides rigorous, mission-oriented training for fire, police, and search-and-recovery dive teams. We focus on zero-visibility environments, evidence recovery, and the advanced survival skills required to operate safely in high-stress, contaminated, or hazardous waters.

The CMAS Philosophy

Because we do not operate under the pressure of retail sales quotas, our non-profit mission allows us to focus entirely on the quality of our graduates. We believe that the rigorous standards applied to our Scientific and Public Safety divers should not be hidden behind a paywall—they should be the baseline for everyone.

Guided by the CMAS educational philosophy, we train our recreational divers to an exceptionally high standard. Why does this matter? Because a diver with elite buoyancy, precise trim, and advanced situational awareness is a safer diver. More importantly, they become a natural protector of the marine environment. When you aren't struggling to control your body in the water, you stop crashing into the reef, and you start observing it. We don't just create underwater tourists; we build highly capable underwater stewards.

Blue Earth News & Documentaries

We are bringing our underwater research to the surface. Blue Earth News is our collaborative YouTube channel dedicated to disseminating local and international environmental news. To complement this, the Academy is producing the Blue Earth Documentary series, a collection of mini-documentaries exploring vital marine and aquatic topics. Through these platforms, we turn raw scientific data into compelling stories that educate and inspire the public.

Youth Leadership: Venture Crew 8 & Camp Workcoeman

We are deeply committed to fostering the next generation of ocean advocates. Through our specialized partnership with Camp Workcoeman on West Hill Pond, we offer a variety of scuba programs to both Scouts of America and the general public.

West Hill Pond provides an ideal, pristine training environment. With private access, remarkably clear water, and consistent weather conditions, this clean lake serves as our primary training ground. For three weeks every July, CTSA conducts intensive Open Water scuba training for Scouts, emphasizing safe diving practices, environmental awareness, and conservation. We also offer advanced specialty courses for returning students, providing a structured pathway for continued skill development.

The Citizen Science Network

In partnership around the state, we deploy our highly trained divers to directly support ongoing marine research. This program connects high schools, universities, and local dive clubs, creating a collaborative network of divers assisting in vital data collection. But you don't have to be a diver to make a difference—the Citizen Science Network welcomes everyone to participate in local water sampling and beach cleanups, fostering broad-based environmental stewardship.

STEM & Academic Partnerships: The Sound School

Our longest and most extensive partnership is with The Sound School, a vocational high school in New Haven specializing in marine science and technology. This collaboration serves as the primary hub for our research and AAUS scientific programming.

At the heart of this partnership is the Sound School Reef Program, an innovative initiative focused on restoring oyster reefs in New Haven Harbor. Through this hands-on program, students actively participate in:

  • Artificial Reef Construction: Building vital habitats using concrete and oyster shells to filter water and support local marine life.

  • Oyster Cultivation: Learning the aquaculture techniques necessary to cultivate oysters and improve harbor water quality.

  • Scientific Research: Conducting ongoing health assessments of the reefs, monitoring water quality, and studying ecosystem impacts.

  • Community Engagement: Raising awareness about marine conservation and involving the local community in restoration efforts.

Educational & High-Adventure Expeditions

Exploration and discovery are central to our mission. CTSA organizes incredibly popular research and high-adventure expeditions, ranging from our annual Reef Renewal expedition in Bonaire to historic wreck diving in Truk Lagoon.

To ensure these life-changing trips remain accessible and affordable, all expeditions operate on a low-to-no-profit basis for the Academy. We also proudly offer additional discounts to our dedicated volunteers, rewarding those who give back to our local conservation efforts.
